The Quarter Drill

When you have a putt of around five feet do your knees begin to shake and you find your stroke has taken a break? Has the hole shrunk in size to about the size of a key hole? There is a way to beat these feelings and improve your approach to them.

Don't try to guide the ball into the cup, instead try to hit the back of the cup. You will get several benefits from doing this;

  • First, by making a more assertive stroke it is often a steadier stroke.
  • Putts hold their line better if they are firmly struck.
  • A putt that is firmly hit will allow you to play less break.

To practice this on the putting green, place a quarter so it overhangs the back edge of the hole. now, try to hit a half dozen three foot putts into the hole. Oncce you have mastered the three foot distance, more back to five feet.

Reward yourself for each time you hit the quarter because it is then you know you have made a solid and bold stroke.
