Got the Yips — Here's a Cure

When we stand over a chip shot from the fringe of the green with a feeling of anxiety or apprehension, we might already have the yips or are getting ready to have a yip attack. You might want to try this simple technique on your next chip shot to overcome the problem.

The problem just might be with your grip. You might be able to cure the yips by changing your grip. At address pretend you are going to grip the club as if you were going to putt. Only this time grip the club with your left hand where the club shaft meets the grip. Also, don't place all your fingers together around the shaft. Let the shaft fit between your index and middle fingers. Make sure the grip rests near the middle of your inner wrist. Make sure the club is square to your target line.

Next grip the shaft with your right hand around your forearm, pressing the extended shaft gently against your left forearm. Your grip pressure must remain light without any pressure in your fingers.

This grip will take your wrist and hands out of controlling the swing and left you arms do the swinging.

Keep it Simple - It Shouldn't be Complicated!

Do not try to make chipping more complicated than it needs to be. For most of us the goal is to hit the ball cleanly and without hitting the ground first. For many, they try flipping their wrists to get the ball airborne and only end up hitting the ground and end up chunking the shot.

One key thought in chipping well is to make sure your hands stay ahead of the club head during the swing. You will also want to keep from breaking your wrists during the swing. The ideal swing will have the club head hitting down on the ball causing the ball to pop forward. The ball should be placed well back in your stance to help with this.

If you are hitting over a hazard and the ball needs to get into the air, let the loft of the club to the work for you by swinging as described above. The more we try to get the ball up in the air by using our hands will typically end in disaster. Let the clubs loft do the work!

Practice will allow you to judge the distance. The farther the shot increase the length of your backswing, trying to keep your weight more on your front foot.
