3 Putting Tips For the Weekend Golfer

By Darell McKissick

Putting tips from the so-called big name golf teachers tend to over complicate the game you are playing. They work best for those with a lot of practice time on their hands. For the average golfer who plays only on the weekend, they will most likely not do much to improve their putting.

For the weekend player, putting tips need to be stripped down to the bare essentials. If you only play on the weekend and don't practice daily, it is pointless to try to build a putting stroke based on the advice of the well meaning teacher who takes the professionals from being in the top 2% of all putters into the top 1%.

It is for those weekend golfer that these tips are written.

  1. Play more break on faster greens and downhill putts. Play less break on slower greens and uphill putts. The faster the putt overall, the more it will break. Most weekend players fail to adjust their read and allow for the greater break. Uphill and downhill slopes have a big effect on the break of a putt, as well as the speed.
  2. Lag everything outside of 10 feet. It is better to be 2 inches short from 20 feet than to knock it 5 feet past the hole. You can avoid needless three putts by not getting cute with the first putt. You have to draw a line somewhere. The weekend player shouldn't expect to make many putts outside of ten feet. Focus on the speed and make sure you have a tap in. Golf is a lot more fun when you have a lot of tap ins.
  3. Line up your golf ball. Some people still don't do this most basic thing. If you don't create a line you can see on your golf ball, and you don't match that line up to the target line, you are putting blind. It's the putting equivalent of using a tee.

If you only play on the weekend and don't practice, the best putting tips are the ones that will keep you from humiliating yourself and ruining your score. It makes the day more fun if you don't have to sweat out a five footer on every green. Besides, you can't expect to putt like Tiger Woods unless you practice as much as he does.

Now let me show you the unknown fundamental of putting. It's essential for consistent putting when you don't have the time or desire to practice.
