Golf Research in Play -- Golf Clubs That Perform and at a Great Price
From: Larry Janis, the weekend golfer
We weren't sure what to expect from the Golf Research in Play golf clubs when we first found their web site. We certainly were more than a bit skeptical that the clubs would perform as advertised especially at the price they were asking for them. The images of the clubs truely looked great on their web site. We are firm believers that one gets what they pay for. (There are instances when we sometimes don't, but that might be our fault.) Or more simply, make sure the money spent is enough but not too much for what you are getting.
When we first contacted G.R.I.P. all they offered were hybrids, wedges, and a putter. They have since grown to now offer a line of irons, fairway woods, and a driver. They must be doing something right to be expanding so effectively. We couldn't beleive we would be able to talk about them in a positive manner.
We have played with the wedges, hybrids, and fairway woods. (We haven't play with the putter because we use a long putter.) We are extrememly pleased with the clubs. They each have a nice appearance when standing over the ball. The hybrids and the fairway woods have a nice blue color that seems in instill a calming effect. But most important the clubs worked and worked well, we had not trouble getting the ball airborn with either the hybrid or the fairway wood. Probably most surprising was our change-of-mind about the fairway woods. Whether out of the rough or from the fairway we were able to make solid contact and enjoyed the high ball flight, soft landing and the distance we got.
We didn't like the blue grips that came with the clubs, but we typically don't like anyones stock grips. But at the same time we have to comment that their clubs did have a soft feel to them and we did not have any real negative things to say about them when one of our rounds was played when it rained. So the grips worked well, but just not what we are used to playing with. It's just a personal hangup.
G.R.I.P. has invested quite a large amount of energy into the research of their clubs and at the same time are working different marketing channels to promote the clubs while keeping the marketing expenses at a minimum. Certainly a different approach from the tactics of the larger club manufacturers.
Anyone looking for a quality golf club should take the time to take a look at the clubs G.R.I.P. has to offer. A solid golf club, nice looking and at a great price. Anyone who just wants to buy the "Big Name" golf club should stay away. We have found that the least expensive always isn't inferior and the most expensve isn't always the best. We have found the the blues jeans offered at Sam's Club fit us better and wear better than those made by the brand names available for two or three times the cost.
For a small investment in your golf game you could truely be surprised and pleased with the G.R.I.P. clubs and in turn ordering more to fill out your set. We recommend these clubs and have them in our golf bag. We feel comfortable suggesting you really give them a try.
Article Summary: Highly recommended. Check out the Golf Research in Play website for more infromation.

G.R.I.P. 460cc Beta Titanium Driver
Every golfer enjoys the feeling of hitting a long straight tee shot. The G.R.I.P. 460cc Beta Titanium Driver is designed to allow ordinary players to hit the tee shots of their dreams.
The Craftsmanship — Aerospace-Grade 460cc Beta Titanium
Our G.R.I.P. Driver offers an enormous 460cc beta titanium clubhead, the largest allowable by the USGA. It is constructed using aerospace-grade, beta titanium, with the maximum allowable COR (Coefficient of Restitution), enabling the clubface to give slightly at impact and spring back.
Additionally, the clubface’s generous sweet spot produces exceptionally long and straight drives, and fewer mis-hits. Its deep clubface also promotes a high launch angle and low spin rate to maximize distance.
Elevated MOI
The G.R.I.P. 460cc Driver’s innovative design boosts its MOI (Moment of Inertia) by moving the club’s weight from its center, decreasing side spin and increasing ball speed. The elevated MOI also significantly reduces twisting of the clubhead, allowing for straighter shots even on off-center hits.
Rear-Sole Weighting
The GRIP 460cc Beta Titanium Driver features swing-correcting, fixed weight ports in the club’s rear sole, providing for a lower, deeper center of gravity that helps you close the clubface at impact and eliminate or reduce slicing. The G.R.I.P. fixed weighting system also reacts effortlessly to off-center hits by squaring the face during contact, making it the benchmark in fixed-weight driver technology.
A Variety of Lofts and Shafts
Our G.R.I.P. Driver captures the power of its beta titanium clubhead, while maintaining a classic driver shape. It is available in three different lofts 9', 10.5' and 12'. In addition, we offer a variety of shaft types for our G.R.I.P. 460cc Beta Titanium Driver, including a choice of graphite — Regular, Stiff Flex, Senior Flex, Lady Flex — or True Temper Steel. A head cover is also included.

G.R.I.P. Hot Steel Fairway Woods
G.R.I.P.’s Hot Steel Fairway Woods give golfers confidence from the fairway, rough, and tee. Our fairway woods were developed to benefit players of all abilities through their best-in-class design and materials, as well as their superior forgiveness.
The Craftsmanship — H2045 Hot Steel
The clubface of the G.R.I.P. Fairway Woods is made from a heat-treated, H2045 cast stainless “Hot Steel,” which is lighter and stronger than the standard metals — 431 and 17-4 steel — used in most of today’s golf clubs. By working with H2045 steel, we were able to decrease our fairway woods’ face thickness from the standard 3.0mm to 2.0mm. As a result of the reduced thickness and the clubs’ shallow face, golfers can launch the ball with intense velocity, thus increasing the ball speed.
Back-of-the-Head Weighting
The G.R.I.P. Hot Steel Fairway Woods sleek design features a low- to mid-profile. Fixed weight ports in the back of the club make the G.R.I.P. Hot Steel Fairway Woods easy-to-hit and make it easy-to-launch the ball, while not sacrificing distance. Additionally, the clubs’ design produces higher ball flight and lower spin conditions leading to unmatched carry and roll, and superior distance.
A Variety of Lofts and Shafts
The G.R.I.P. Fairway Woods clubhead features a classic look and feel in the address position, giving golfer’s certainty in their swing. They are available in three different lofts, including the 3-wood 15 degree, 5-wood 18 degree, and 7-wood 21 degree models. In addition, we offer our fairway woods with the choice of graphite — Regular, Stiff Flex, Lady Flex and Senior Flex— or True Temper Steel shafts. A head cover is also included.

G.R.I.P. Hyper Steel Hybrids
Over the last few years, a new trend has developed. Golfers have been replacing their harder to hit and inconsistent long irons and short fairway woods with easier to hit "hybrids" or "utility clubs." Developed by studying the golf games of recreational golfers - men and women with handicaps ranging from six to infinity - the G.R.I.P. Hyper Steel Hybrids offer you the distance of a fairway wood and the accuracy of an iron. Our hybrids are technologically advanced, easy to hit, fun to use, and save strokes.
The Craftsmanship - The Hyper Steel Advantage
G.R.I.P. researched the materials commonly used in hybrid and utility golf clubs - titanium, stainless steel, maraging steel, magnesium, as well as several other metals - during our hybrid development process. G.R.I.P. also tested subjects of varying handicaps and swing types, and found that similar results were achieved regardless of the club material. However, the vast majority liked the sound, feel and the way the ball "jumped" off the hybrid club face when "Hyper Steel" was used. Hyper Steel is heat-treated, cast steel, making it stronger than the steel found in most golf clubs. It produces a unique solid "ting" sound on contact as the ball explodes off the club face. The G.R.I.P. Hyper Steel Hybrids also feature the perfect amount of offset to give you additional forgiveness and accuracy.
G.R.I.P. Weight-Balancing System for Hybrid Customization
Every swing is unique. Some golfers draw, others fade, some slice, while others may hook. Then there are the ones that hit the ball dead straight! Here lies the greatest challenge behind designing hybrid golf clubs that will please the majority of golfers. Addressing this challenge head-on, G.R.I.P. developed a balancing system for our Hyper Steel Hybrids, utilizing weighted screws in the heel and toe of the clubs.
The clubs come pre-assembled with a heavy, six-gram brass screw in the heel and a lighter, three-gram aluminum screw in the toe for fade control and slice reduction. This weight combination equates to right-to-left ball flight for right-handed golfers and a smooth left-to-right ball flight for lefties. Finally, for those golfers who have a habit of hooking shots, a quick switch of the brass and aluminum screws will enable you to hit the ball straighter than you ever imagined!
Superior Shafts and Grip
For our Hyper Steel Hybrids, we used the G.R.I.P. Uni-flex High Modulus Graphite Shafts, specifically designed for these clubs. These unique hybrid shafts feature a mid-to-low kick point to help you get the ball airborne more easily. Each shaft has a minimal torque, which reduces any shaft turning or twisting, and provides exceptional ball flight and pinpoint accuracy. In addition, each shaft is wrapped in an ultra-soft, all-weather polyurethane, two-piece grip. Bold Fit and Finish
The G.R.I.P. design team developed the Hyper Steel Hybrids to be your favorite clubs. Coming in four different lofts, including 2H, 3H, 4H and 5H models, the clubs are as easy to look at as they are to hit, with their penetrating, bold blue finish. Matching head covers come standard to reduce excess wear and tear.

G.R.I.P. CNC Milled WedgesLaunched in May 2006, G.R.I.P.'s CNC Milled Wedges are cast from 8620 mild carbon steel for a proper spin and an exceptionally soft feel on contact, unlike the craftsmanship behind traditional standard stainless steel wedges. These wedges feature unique milling gradient specifications to provide ideal spin rates and feel around the greens for precision shot-making. As a result of their design, each G.R.I.P. wedge makes it easier to address the ball, line up shots and control ball trajectory. G.R.I.P.’s CNC Milled Wedge Offerings

G.R.I.P. Sweetness Putter
Putter technology has changed dramatically over the last few years. Putters are bigger than ever and the designs continue to advance. Through G.R.I.P.’s research, we have found that both recreational golfers and professionals are having more success on the greens with larger putters. However, G.R.I.P. has also found that one of the most critical components of putting is lining up your shot and aiming your putt. Joining together these two factors, we have designed the G.R.I.P. Sweetness™ Putter. Now, you can line up and aim your putts more easily with our oversized putter.
The Craftsmanship — Sink More Putts By Design
Sweetness features a “Dual Tension Rod” two-bar design, with a center aiming line between the rods. This center aiming line will enable you to visually align putts and produce a straight putting stroke.
The front and back of the Sweetness putter utilize reinforced weighting ports for even weight distribution through the putting stroke and perfect balance from set up to follow-through. In addition, Sweetness features a double insert on the face of the club. The face’s soft, CNC-milled aluminum center is surrounded by a soft polymer for producing a smooth, true roll.
Superior Shafts and Grip
The double-bend, aluminum shaft helps set the putter at address and gives a slight offset to help set up the putt and keep your hands in the proper position. The shaft is wrapped in an ultra-soft, all-weather polyurethane two-piece grip.
Bold Fit and Finish
Our Sweetness putter is not only unique in its special “Dual Tension Rod” design. Its aesthetically pleasing brushed gold and black finish also makes it stand out from the crowd. The striking contrast between the putter’s matte black body and Z-gold-plated tension rods provide an extraordinary alignment system, making putting that much easier.
